From Humble Beginnings to Howard County Judge
Judge John Kuchno embodies Howard County’s values.
Judge John Kuchno grew up in a diverse working class neighborhood where hard work and treating people with respect were core values that define him to this day.
His path to becoming a judge didn’t come easy.
The grandson of immigrants, his parents dropped out of high school to provide for their families.
John’s father sometimes worked as many as three jobs to pay the bills. John got a job at 14 and once worked seven days a week for eight consecutive months.
He worked as a member of the Teamster’s Union unloading railroad cars on the midnight shift.
John attended public school. He was the first person in his family to graduate from college and finished at the top of his class at the University of Maryland..

Working His Way Through School
Upon his graduation from the University of Maryland, he worked as a reporter covering local and state politics, breaking news and sports. But it was his coverage of court trials that whetted his appetite to pursue the law as a new career.
John worked during the day and went to law school at night so that he could pay the tuition and earn his law degree.
John then began a long and distinguished career in private practice where he had numerous cases with and against the top lawyers in Maryland and across the country.
