(Ellicott City)—Judge John Kuchno has won the “immediate endorsement” of the Howard County Bar Association for election as Circuit Court Judge. The endorsement follows widespread support of Judge Kuchno by the Bar Association’s attorney members in a referendum vote. The general election is November 3, 2020.

The referendum surveyed lawyers to determine their views of the integrity, temperament, and professional competence of the candidates for Circuit Court Judge and whether an endorsement should be made. The survey was conducted electronically by anonymous ballots. For the Bar Association’s endorsement, a candidate must get at least 80% of “best-qualified” responses from the voting lawyers. Judge Kuchno met that exceptional threshold.

According to David Coaxum, President-Elect of the Howard County Bar Association, “The referendum reflects that the record of incumbent Judge John Kuchno for integrity, temperament, and professional competence is such that he is entitled to immediate endorsement for election.”

Judge Kuchno, who has served on the Howard County bench since January 2019, thanked the Bar Association for its tremendous show of support. “This vote of confidence is extremely meaningful and significant,” said Judge Kuchno. “It comes from lawyers who are in our court every day representing real people with real legal issues in the broad range of cases handled by the circuit court. They’re fighting for their clients and are in the very best position to see what happens in my courtroom and how I handle cases. Their overwhelming support of my integrity, temperament, and professional competence sends the strongest message as to the best-qualified candidate to be judge.”

A former Assistant Attorney General, Judge John Kuchno graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Maryland College Park and from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. He practiced law for 35 years, in both public service and private practice.

Judge John Kuchno was appointed as Judge on the Circuit Court for Howard County in December 2018, following a rigorous investigatory, interview, and evaluation process. By law, he must run in the nonpartisan election for judge on November 3, 2020. Judge Kuchno has also been endorsed by the Maryland State Bar Association, the organization representing about 24-thousand lawyers and judges throughout Maryland.
